We built Groypin to keep data in-house and avoid ad tracking. This Policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control your data.

1. What We Collect

Account & Profile
Email address, display name, avatar, user ID, account creation timestamps, and related identifiers.

User Content
Maps, pins (including latitude and longitude coordinates you choose to submit), messages, comments, media, reactions, and related metadata you create or upload.

Usage & Device Information
App version, device type, operating system, language preferences, basic diagnostics and crash logs, pages or screens viewed, features used, and timestamps.

Network & Log Data
IP address, general location inferred from IP (such as city or region), request headers, and logs used for security, rate-limiting, abuse prevention, and service reliability.

Location Data (User-Submitted Pins and Optional Device Location)
Groypin processes precise location data only when you choose to provide it, such as when placing a pin on a map or attaching a location to content. This may include latitude and longitude coordinates.

We do not continuously track your device’s GPS location. Device-level location access is optional and used only when you explicitly enable a feature that requires it (for example, centering the map on your current area).

You control where pins are placed and who can see them through map visibility settings (public or private). Pins and related content may be edited or deleted by you at any time.

Cookies & Local Storage
Session identifiers, CSRF and anti-abuse tokens, and preference settings.

2. How We Use Data

We use the data we collect to:

Operate, maintain, and improve the Service (authentication, storage, real-time features, search, moderation, and performance)

Display maps, pins, and messages according to visibility settings (public or private)

Prevent spam, abuse, harassment, fraud, and other misuse; protect the safety and integrity of users and the Service

Perform debugging, diagnostics, and technical analytics focused on service quality and reliability (not advertising)

Communicate with you regarding updates, security notices, and support requests

Location Precision & Safety Controls

Groypin does not automatically associate your account with precise location data. Pins are placed manually by users. Where available, we may reduce or generalize displayed precision (for example, showing an area rather than an exact doorstep) to enhance user safety.

3. Legal Bases for Processing (EEA/UK)

Where applicable, we process personal data based on:

Contract: providing and operating the Service

Legitimate interests: security, abuse prevention, service improvement, and analytics compatible with your rights

Consent: where required (for example, optional notifications or features)

Legal obligations: compliance with applicable laws and lawful requests

4. Sharing of Information

We do not sell personal information, do not use it for targeted advertising, and do not build advertising profiles based on user behavior or location.

We share data only in the following circumstances:

Service Providers: vendors acting on our instructions (for example, email delivery, anti-abuse verification, DNS or CDN services)

Infrastructure We Operate: self-hosted databases, Supabase services, object storage, and system logs

Legal & Safety Requirements: when required by law or necessary to protect users, the public, or the Service

Community Visibility: content you choose to make public is visible to everyone; content in private maps is visible only to members and designated administrators or moderators of those maps

Any third party that receives personal data on our behalf must safeguard it and use it only for our stated purposes.

5. User-Generated Content Responsibility

Groypin hosts user-generated content, including map pins, messages, and comments. Users are solely responsible for the content they post.

We do not endorse user-generated content and are not responsible for its accuracy, legality, or truthfulness. We provide reporting tools and may review, restrict, or remove content that violates our policies or poses legal or safety risks.

6. Sensitive and Residential Locations

Groypin is not intended to be used to harass, stalk, or endanger individuals. Content involving private residences, dorm rooms, or other sensitive or non-public locations may be subject to additional restrictions.

We may limit visibility, restrict access to, or remove pins or discussions associated with such locations, particularly where consent has not been provided or where safety concerns arise. We reserve the right to take action on this content to protect users and comply with platform requirements.

7. Reporting and Moderation

We provide in-app mechanisms to report pins, comments, or users for abuse, harassment, false statements, or safety concerns. Reported content may be temporarily restricted while reviewed. Reports are used to enforce our policies and protect the community.

8. Data Retention

We retain personal data only as long as necessary to provide the Service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our policies.

When you delete content or your account, we delete associated personal data within a reasonable period, except where retention is required for security, abuse prevention, backups, or legal compliance. Backups and system logs are retained for limited durations and are not restored unless required for integrity or recovery.

9. Security

We use industry-standard administrative and technical safeguards, including access controls, role-based permissions, and server-side protections.

Data is transmitted using secure transport protocols (such as TLS). We do not provide end-to-end encrypted messaging. No system is 100% secure; please use strong passwords and be cautious with what you share.

10. Your Choices & Rights

You have the right to:

Access, correct, or delete your personal data

Request portability where applicable

Withdraw consent where processing relies on consent

Object to or restrict certain processing activities (such as analytics)

California (CCPA/CPRA): You have the right to know, delete, correct, and opt out of “sale” or “sharing” of personal information. Groypin does not sell or share personal information for advertising purposes.

EEA/UK: You may contact your local data protection authority if concerns remain unresolved.

To exercise your rights, contact support@groypin.com. We may verify your identity and may be unable to delete certain data required by law or necessary to operate the Service (such as security or abuse logs).

11. Children

Groypin is not intended for children under 13 years old (or under 16 in some regions). If we learn that we have collected personal data from a child below the applicable minimum age, we will delete it.

12. International Transfers

Personal data may be processed in locations where we or our service providers operate. We use appropriate safeguards, such as contractual commitments, where required by law.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted with a revised effective date. Material changes will be clearly highlighted. Continued use of the Service after changes means you accept the updated Policy.
